Guidance on status

Under thePharmacists and Pharmacy Technicians Order 2007 (as amended), "a person practises as a pharmacist or a pharmacy technician if, whilst acting in the capacity of or holding himself out as a pharmacist or a pharmacy technician, he undertakes any work or gives any advice in relation to the dispensing or use of medicines, the science of medicines, the practice of pharmacy or the provision of health care."

Pharmacy workforce census 2008

The Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain conducted a census of the pharmacy workforce in 2008. Data recieved is currently being analysed and an anonymised report will be published in the second quarter of 2009.

The Society has commissioned three pharmacy workforce censuses in recent years: 2002 (click here), 2003 (click here) and 2005 (click here). These studies generated a huge amount of data that have been used to inform workforce planning and policy development in the profession. For the above three years, the Society has been able to construct a comprehensive picture of who is working, where and for how many hours in each sector of practice. This data, together with annual register analysis has been looked at longitudinally and interesting and valuable trends have been identified around movement between sectors and increasing portfolio working, feminisation of the profession, changing workforce practice (ie, hours worked) and marked changes in career drivers. The data has allowed us to undertake longitudinal analysis to determine changes in workforces over time. An analysis of the census data, with the Society's annual register data 2002-2006 is now available (click here).
